Arestin
Targeted Antibiotic Therapy for Healthier Gums
At Garden Dental Studio, we are committed to offering the most advanced treatments to help our patients achieve and maintain optimal oral health. For patients dealing with periodontal (gum) disease, Arestin® is a powerful tool we use to fight infection and promote healing right where it’s needed most.
Arestin is a locally applied antibiotic treatment that works hand-in-hand with scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) to combat the bacteria causing gum disease. It’s a simple, effective way to give your gums extra support in the fight against infection—helping you achieve healthier gums faster and more effectively.

What Is Arestin?
Arestin is a powdered antibiotic (minocycline hydrochloride) that is placed directly into the pockets between your teeth and gums after scaling and root planing. These pockets form when gum disease causes the gum tissue to pull away from the teeth, creating spaces where harmful bacteria can thrive.
Unlike oral antibiotics, which travel through your entire body, Arestin is delivered exactly where it’s needed—directly at the site of infection. This localized treatment allows for a higher concentration of medication in the gum pocket without exposing the rest of your body to unnecessary antibiotics.
How Does Arestin Work?
After a deep cleaning procedure, we gently apply Arestin into the periodontal pockets. The medication is made up of tiny microspheres that release the antibiotic slowly over time, delivering continuous treatment for up to 21 days. This sustained release helps reduce bacteria and inflammation, giving your gums a better chance to heal and reattach to the teeth.
By significantly lowering the levels of harmful bacteria, Arestin can improve your gum health and increase the success of your non-surgical periodontal treatment.
Benefits of Arestin
- Enhanced Healing: Promotes better reattachment of gum tissue to the teeth.
- Targeted Treatment: Focuses the antibiotic exactly where it’s needed without affecting your whole body.
- Convenient and Comfortable: The application is quick, painless, and requires no additional anesthesia.
- Sustained Protection: Continues fighting bacteria for up to three weeks after placement.
- Improved Outcomes: Works with scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depths and control gum disease more effectively.
Who Can Benefit from Arestin?
Arestin is typically recommended for patients who have moderate to severe periodontal pockets that are difficult to manage with deep cleaning alone. It’s an excellent option if:
- You have pockets deeper than 5mm.
- There’s persistent inflammation despite good oral hygiene.
- You are at higher risk for gum disease progression.
- You want to avoid or delay the need for more invasive surgical treatments.
After Arestin Treatment: What to Expect
Following Arestin placement, you should avoid touching the treated areas and postpone brushing or flossing them for about 12 hours. For the next 10 days, you should also avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could disturb the medication.
We’ll schedule a follow-up visit to monitor your healing and measure the improvement in your gum health. Good home care and regular maintenance visits will further enhance the results.
