Professional Cleanings for a Healthier Smile
At Garden Dental Studio, we believe that preventive care is the key to maintaining a lifetime of healthy, confident smiles. One of the most important preventive services we offer is prophylaxis, also known as a professional dental cleaning. Even with great brushing and flossing habits at home, plaque and tartar can build up over time—making regular professional cleanings essential to keeping your teeth and gums in their best shape.
Prophylaxis is a gentle yet thorough cleaning that removes deposits, stains, and bacteria from your teeth to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. It’s a simple step that can make a huge difference in both your oral and overall health.

What Happens During a Prophylaxis Appointment?
- Plaque and Tartar Removal: Our skilled hygienists use specialized instruments to carefully remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline.
- Teeth Polishing: After cleaning, your teeth will be polished to remove surface stains, leaving your smile smooth and bright.
- Flossing: We’ll floss between each tooth to ensure no debris is left behind.
- Oral Health Check: During your cleaning, we’ll also assess the health of your gums, check for signs of cavities, and may recommend digital X-rays if needed.
Why Prophylaxis Is Important
- Gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis)
- Tooth decay
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Tooth loss in severe cases
How Often Should You Have a Prophylaxis Cleaning?
For most patients, we recommend professional cleanings every six months. However, some individuals—especially those with a history of gum disease, a tendency to build up tartar quickly, or certain health conditions—may benefit from more frequent cleanings (every three to four months).
At your visit, we’ll assess your needs and customize a maintenance schedule that’s right for you.
Prophylaxis vs. Periodontal Maintenance
It’s important to note that prophylaxis is intended for patients with healthy gums or mild gingivitis. If you have been treated for more advanced periodontal disease, you may need periodontal maintenance visits instead. These appointments are more in-depth and focused on maintaining gum and bone health following periodontal therapy.
We’ll help you understand which type of care best suits your current oral health status.
